In addition to conducting polling on public attitudes toward afterschool, the Alliance gathers and maintains new and existing data on critical issues such as program need and availability, promising practices, funding and sustainability resources. Monitoring afterschool activities on a national, state and local level is an important part of this effort.

The Alliance endeavors to be an effective voice for
afterschool at a national, state and local level. Communications
strategies include: a national public service announcement
campaign entitled "What Is a Hero?"; special events;
issue briefings; mailings and electronic communications;
conference presentations and more. Communities across
the nation are urged to participate in the second annual
Lights On Afterschool
event. To be held October 9, 2003 this nationwide celebration
will highlight the programs serving families and children
after school as well as the need for more lights to
be on.
