Federal afterschool funding update, June 27

June 29, 2018: Yesterday the full Senate Appropriations Committee passed their FY2019 education spending bill, sending it on to the Senate floor with full funding for 21st CCLC afterschool programs. See Afterschool Alliance Executive Director Jodi Grant’s statement here: http://www.afterschoolalliance.org/press_archives/Jodi-Grant-Senate-FY19-Approps-Bill-062818.pdf

What you need to know about the federal appropriations process and its support fo afterschool and summer learning programs:

  1. Now is the time to let Congress know that federal afterschool funding is critical to support local community-based afterschool and summer learning programs in your community. The House and Senate appropriations committees are in the midst of passing their education spending bills for FY2019 which begins October 1 and goes through September 30, 2019. Funding for education programs like the 21st Century Community Learning Center (21st CCLC) initiative appropriated as part of this process will be available for programs during the 2019-2020 school year. So far, afterschool supporters have made 745 contacts to Congress this week—reach out now and keep our momentum strong!

  1. Senate Labor, Health and Human Services and Education appropriations subcommittee passed their FY2019 education spending bill yesterday, June 26. While the bill has not yet made public, Commnity Learning Centers is funded at $1.212 billion, while the Child Care Development Block Grant (CCDBG) is funded at $5.3 billion. Other key funding streams will be announced later this week.

  1. On Thursday, June 28, the full Senate Appropriations Committee will meet to discuss and vote on the FY2019 education sending bill, sending it to the Senate floor in July, likely in combination with several other spending bills. This blog will be updated on June 28 to reflect spending levels in the bill that passes the Committee.

  1. On the other side of Congress: the House marked up their FY2019 education spending bill in early July at the subcommittee level. Afterschool funding was maintained at last year’s level of $1.212 billion. The full Appropriations Committee was scheduled to debate and pass the bill on June 26 but that was delayed until mid-July. Stay tuned for further information about the House appropriations process next month.
