Maplewood Elementary Students Create Art from Trash to Raise Awareness About Recycling, Greeley Tribune (Colorado)

After a discussion on recycling, students in the Maplewood Elementary afterschool program in Colorado were inspired to raise awareness of the issue. They formed committees within the program, which aims to empower students to learn about subjects that interest them, and began researching the effects of pollution on various ecosystems. The group displays their research results alongside sculptures of animals harmed by pollution that were created using recyclable materials. “We really want to show the outside world to stop polluting our oceans,” fifth-grader Larissa Garcia told the Greeley Tribune.

STREAM Offers After School Curriculum for Highland Kids, Renton Reporter (Washington)

Each day, an average of 55 students ages 5 to 14 come to the STREAM afterschool program in Washington state to engage in activities including computer programming, volunteering, entrepreneurship classes, cooking, and more. The program trains staff in social-emotional learning to help students monitor their emotions and reflect on their actions with the aid of stress kits, calm spaces and staff support. “The ultimate goal is to develop kids with self-confidence, persistence, positive attitude and an interest in learning after engaging in our after school program,” Renton Recreation and Neighborhoods Manager Carrie Nass told the Renton Reporter.

Free After-School Sports Program Called School of Champions Launches in Flint, MLive (Michigan)

Former professional basketball player Linnell Jones-McKenney recently created the School of Champions afterschool program to empower Michigan students ages 8 to 17 through sports and educational classes. Physical activities will range from football to bowling, and the program will provide dinner, tutoring and mentors. More than 300 students are already registered. “We want to give these kids an opportunity to dream. These kids now don’t have access to after school programs where they can dream,” Jones-McKenney told MLive. “We lost the opportunity to expose our children to a building that has structured activity, safe places, where they can be fed, mentored or challenged.”

Museum Offering Young Women in Science Program, Grand Rapids Business Journal (Michigan)

A new afterschool program in Michigan connects middle school girls with female professionals working in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) fields in their communities. Created as a partnership between the Grand Rapids Public Museum and the DTE Foundation, the Young Women in Science program features projects in electrochemistry, renewable energy, hydrogen-powered cars and more. “The Young Women in Science program keeps middle school girls engaged with the sciences at a time in their educational journey where studies show they move away from STEM,” DTE Foundation President Lynette Dowler told the Grand Rapids Business Journal. “We’re proud to support the next generation of engineers and scientists.”
