A Summer of Catch-Up: How Delaware Students are Making up for Time Lost to COVID-19 (Technical.ly)

School districts across Delaware used funds included in the American Rescue Plan to bolster their summer learning programs, often partnering with community organizations to do so. In Sussex County, First State Community Action Agency, which operates afterschool programs, offered a robust summer enrichment camp focused on supporting students emotionally after a difficult year while also boosting their academic skills. “Parents were very excited. We’re getting kids to read books, we have tons and tons of books that go along with the program, [and] activities that go along with the books,” Program Director Dr. Sandi Hagans-Morris told Technical.ly.

Lincoln County Youth Center Opens For Preschool And After School Programs, Boise State Public Radio (Idaho)

After a year-long renovation, an abandoned church in Richfield, Idaho has been given new life as an essential center for the community. The Lincoln County Youth Center will provide low-cost preschool as well as free afterschool programming in a rural county where most residents commute 30 to 60 minutes to work. “We don’t have a lot of daycare options; we have no other afterschool options. We have very little preschool,” Karma Metzler Fitzgerald, Lincoln County Youth Commission President and co-founder of the new youth center, told Boise State Public Radio. The afterschool program will provide sports, arts and life skills as well as weekly Friday field trips when county schools are closed.

Indianapolis Summer Learning Labs Show Early Promise, WFYI (Indiana)

The 3,000 students participating in Indiana’s Summer Learning Labs showed remarkable gains in math and reading levels. The program, supported by the state’s COVID recovery grants and run through the United Way of Central Indiana and The Mind Trust, helped demonstrate the success of school and community organization partnerships. “What we oftentimes see is from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. schools are in charge,” Brandon Brown, CEO of The Mind Trust told WFYI. “But we have all these amazing community assets that need to be leveraged more effectively throughout the school day.”

Today, the nonprofit serves more than 650 teens with afterschool and summer programming that features mentorship, homework help, life skills development and career education including culinary arts, business, skilled trades, and science, technology, engineering and math (STEM). All THAT continued to support students throughout the pandemic. “Just as doctors are essential workers and they are still serving people, All THAT is still serving our teens,” Hicks told the Columbus Dispatch. “We saw ourselves as essential workers for our community.”
