Why Wyoming Is Using After-school Programs to Keep Kids Out of School-to-prison Pipeline, Youth Today

In 2015, the Wyoming Afterschool Alliance launched an initiative to combat Wyoming’s high rates of youth involvement with the justice system by promoting community collaboration with afterschool programs. Strategies include holding summits that bring together key stakeholders, creating an inventory of afterschool programs in the state and empowering school districts to refer high-risk children to afterschool programs. Afterschool “provides a safe place with supportive mentors who help children make smart choices and avoid risky behaviors online and offline,” Wyoming Afterschool Alliance Director Linda Barton wrote in Youth Today. “We are changing the dynamics of juvenile justice reform in Wyoming through this strategy.”

Evanston Organizes: Youth & Opportunity United Bridges Opportunity Gap for Post-Secondary Success, The Daily Northwestern (Illinois)

Youth & Opportunity United (Y.O.U.) provides more than 1,600 third through 12th grade students with safe opportunities to explore their interests at 11 schools in Evanston, Illinois. Y.O.U.’s afterschool and summer learning programs provide academic support, socio-emotional learning projects including discussions of themes in Pixar movies, and a wide variety of interest-based activities supported by community partnerships. “The plethora of opportunities that we’re able to offer is really unique, so youth can be a part of Y.O.U. but they can engage in STEM programming,” Elementary Out-of-School-Time Director Megan Orleans told The Daily Northwestern. “They can engage in an artists-in-residence program. They can do all of that within the same week or throughout the entire course of the year.”

Held in the complex’s clubhouse space, the Kids Club Literacy Project will provide literacy-focused academic support and mental health counseling. “This is collaboration, and this is innovation at its finest,” Boys and Girls Clubs of Larimer County Executive Director Kaycee Headrick told the Reporter-Herald. “There are so many other components coming in to make sure kids and families who need help, who need services get access to that right away.”
