Winsted Students Can Participate in American Mural Project, The Register Citizen (Connecticut)

A new partnership with the American Mural Project (AMP) will give students in the CHAMPS afterschool program in Connecticut the chance to be creative and solve problems through unique art projects. AMP will host music classes focused on composition that use instruments, body percussion and found objects as well as art classes where students make masks and puppets using recycled materials. The CHAMPS program also offers robotics, swimming and more. “AMP is thrilled with this partnership as the value of creative programs during ‘out of school time’ is undeniable,” Programs Director Michelle Begley told the Register Citizen.  “Connecting with the children and families in CHAMPS allows us to reveal the ‘art of work’ to elementary students and engage them in exploring the artistic community right in their backyard.”

Emerald Elementary Hosts Afterschool Career Classes, Daily Camera (Colorado)

At the Dragon afterschool program in Boulder, Colorado, elementary students build and repair bicycles they get to keep. The program offers six career pathways classes to inspire a love of learning in students, build their practical skills and expose them to career opportunities. The bike mechanics course incorporates engineering components, and other classes include Dragon TV, Junior Emergency Responders, computer science, lab science and Junior CSI. “We heard from principals that kids are disengaging earlier and would talk about dropping out as early as fifth grade,” Allison Billings, executive director of Impact on Education, which funds the program, told the Daily Camera. “It’s a good time to start connecting kids to careers, to show them that connection between careers and their studies.”

Girls Inc. of Metro Denver Offers Young Women a “Safe Space” to Learn About the World and Themselves, Denver Post (Colorado)

A 2017 program survey indicated 92 percent of girls at the Girls Inc. of Metro Denver afterschool program found science and math interesting, and 25 percent more girls at the program are happy with their bodies than the national average. Through entrepreneurship training, science and technology programs, mentorship and more, the organization builds a safe community for girls to explore their interests and build their confidence. The Denver site serves about 2,300 girls each year. “It gives girls an opportunity to learn things they usually wouldn’t learn in school, and you get to do experiments,” 13-year-old Ashley Arango told the Denver Post. “I feel really happy here. I want to do all the things because I know they can support me in my learning and emotionally.”

At a surprise all-school assembly at Ellis Elementary in Illinois, Chicago Bears Chairman George McCaskey announced a grant for a new afterschool program focused on multicultural literacy. Designed by the school’s bilingual teachers, the program will use high-quality Spanish literature to support academic achievement and spark cultural conversations between parents and students. “We would like parents to come in to experience literature with their children written in authentic Spanish, which [is] not just translated from English,” teacher Monica Silva-Alejo told the Daily Herald.
