Sawyer Elementary Group Gets Girls Excited About Math and Science (Ames Tribune, Iowa)

A new afterschool program at Sawyer Elementary School is empowering young girls to pursue careers in science and math. “The reason we wanted to start this group was simply to empower young women and instill the belief in them that they can do anything that men can do,” fifth-grade teacher Chris Douglas told the Ames Tribune. Each Thursday, a group of 20 fifth-grade girls gather to conduct a variety of STEM experiments, like testing different methods to fit a water balloon and a hard-boiled egg into a bottle and creating exothermic reactions using hydrogen peroxide and yeast.

Showing Camden’s Bright Youth to the World (Philadelphia Inquirer, Pennsylvania)

Students in the Camden Adolescents Striving for Achievement (CASA) afterschool program put together portraits and personal essays for a community exhibit at the BB&T Pavilion this weekend. The goal of the show, “Look Again: The Young People of CASA,” is to gain exposure for the program and show the community the strength, resilience and potential of the at-risk teens it serves. “This is really about getting people to see the other side of Camden,” afterschool worker and project organizer Den Sweeney told the Philadelphia Inquirer. “That there are kids here who are succeeding.”

How a Maine Nonprofit Uses Writing to Help Immigrant Kids Find a Sense of Belonging (Washington Post, District of Columbia)

The Telling Room’s Young Writers and Leaders afterschool program is using poetry and storytelling to help young immigrants and refugees acclimate to life in America. The nine-month program serves about 30 students a year, tutoring them in English, assisting with college applications, offering financial planning advice and, most importantly, giving them a safe place to share their personal stories. The Telling Room holds events where students can present their writings to members of the local community. “Portland’s connection to the immigrant and refugee community is stronger because our program helps humanize the refugee experience,” Andrew Griswold, a Telling Room spokesman, told the Washington Post. The organization was one of 12 exceptional art-based afterschool programs recently recognized by the White House.

Black Cops Work to Teach De-escalation (Chicago Tribune, Illinois)

The National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE) is sending its officers into Chicago elementary schools to teach students about police work, citizens’ civil rights and how to interact safely with law enforcement. The Law and Your Community afterschool program hopes to bridge the trust gap between young African-Americans and the police. Through the program, the officers have an opportunity to explain their policing process and discuss ways to de-escalate tense situations that could end in tragedy. It’s also a chance to show the kids that the officers are more than just their uniforms. “We have contact with the students in nonpolice settings,” Deputy Chief Tommye Sutton of the University of Chicago police told the Chicago Tribune. “They see that we smile; we laugh; we’re human.”
