One year ago, Tampa’s Sulphur Springs Elementary School began a program modeled after the Harlem Children’s Zone, a New York social-services program that engages the entire community and promotes children’s education. Read how the community has changed since its implementation.
 
After-School Programs Scramble to Meet Demand (Providence Journal-Bulletin, Rhode Island)
Afterschool Ambassador Sarah Cahill discusses the need for afterschool programs in Rhode Island, where the Afterschool Alliance’s America After 3PM survey found that more than one in four school children are unsupervised in the afternoons.
 
In Denville, After-School Activities Get a Tentative OK (Star-Ledger, New Jersey)
When funds for afterschool activities were cut last year, parents in Denville raised money to sustain them. This year, thanks to continued “overwhelming support from parents,” money for the programs has been tentatively replaced in the school budget.
 
Center to End After-School Hours (Star-Gazette, New York)
Despite community-wide fundraising efforts, the Schuyler Teen Center will be forced to end afterschool hours this month. Staff members hope the change will be temporary, and are working on a plan with the community and leaders across the country to restructure the center.
