Afterschool Alliance named a small gem by Washingtonian magazine

Please allow us a moment to toot our own horn a little bit.

One of the Afterschool Alliance’s core beliefs is that afterschool programs are essential for supporting working families.  We believe that when children are safe, supported and learning, working parents are free to focus on the workplace, helping them to be more successful, and in turn, helping to create a better situation for the whole family.

Throughout the Afterschool Alliance’s 14 year history, we have remained committed to working families, including those on our own staff.  That’s why we’re thrilled and honored to announce that the Afterschool Alliance has been recognized by Washingtonian magazine as one of the best places to work in Washington, D.C.

Washingtonian magazine named the Afterschool Alliance a ‘small gem’ as part of its "50 Great Places to Work" issue for the Washington, D.C., metro area. The bi-annual issue on the best places to work in the D.C.-area states that “staffers at this DC nonprofit, which supports afterschool programs, feel challenged and recognized and love the warm culture.”

A congratulatory email from Washingtonian editor Sherri Dalphonse highlights the Afterschool Alliance as a “great small office,” stating that “employees are clearly happy there.”  The Washingtonian has chosen "50 Great Places to Work" in the Washington, D.C., area every two years since 1999. This year's 50 winning workplaces were chosen on the basis of measures such as generous pay and benefits, challenging and interesting work, great work/life balance, opportunities to learn and grow, financial stability, commitment to charity and community, and the recognition and respect given to employees. A panel of editors reviewed more than 200 companies and some 13,000 employee surveys, and chose this year's winners with final determinations relying heavily on the scores given by a company's employees.

We are honored by the recognition.  It encourages our organization to continue living by the principles that we fight for every day and supporting families in every way that we can. 

The Afterschool Alliance grew from public awareness efforts undertaken by the Mott Foundation through an unprecedented, public-private partnership with the Department of Education to expand afterschool programs through the 21st Century Community Learning Centers afterschool program. The federal government provided grants to local communities for afterschool programs, while the Mott Foundation funded training, evaluation and public awareness activities. The Foundation and the Department's efforts caught the attention of several outside entities with a shared interest in achieving afterschool for all. These groups came together in September 1999 to create the Afterschool Alliance. Today, the Afterschool Alliance works to actively expand access to quality before-school, summer learning and afterschool programs by collaborating with a broad range of organizations and supporters, including policymakers and policymaker associations, advocacy groups, afterschool coalitions and providers at every level, business and philanthropic leaders, technical assistance organizations and leaders representing a variety of interests, each with a stake in afterschool.
