The Afterschool Alliance’s America After 3PM household survey found that afterschool program participation has increased nationwide since 2004, when the survey was first conducted, but the new data shows that large numbers of children remain unsupervised when the school day ends. “President Obama, his education secretary, Arne Duncan, and Congress must all acknowledge that a lot more is needed and quickly come up with a plan to increase financing for quality after-school programs,” says the New York Times editorial.

State-by-state results for America After 3PM were released with the help of Dallas Mayor Tom Leppert, Police Chief David Kunkle and Afterschool Ambassadors Tanya McDonald, executive director of the Dallas AfterSchool Network and Gail Vessels, vice president of program development/management for YMCA of Metropolitan Dallas. The Afterschool Alliance named Texas a “Top 10 State for Afterschool.”

The Northeast “Out of School” Alliance and the Kansas Enrichment Network hosted a Lights on Afterschool event to showcase the impact of afterschool programs, in a state where participation has increased in the last five years. “The verdict is in,” said Kansas Senator Vicki Schmidt. “Kansas parents and children want and need after-school programs… Our children deserve it, and we can help provide it.”
