More afterschool sites and other facilities in Michigan have started serving free dinners to children in low-income areas during the recession, thanks to reimbursement through the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Child and Adult Food Care Program. The state is one of 13 that qualify for the program.

Although Tacoma’s East Side Boys & Girls Club is closing, a new center called HOPE (Home of Opportunity, Possibility and Empowerment) will be opening this fall. This new model – already in place in other Washington cities – relies on community collaboration to better serve youth and families, and allows other non-profits to use the building and its resources.
