Choose your own Lights On adventure

What does your afterschool program really need? Are you looking for new funders? Trying to make the case for afterschool on Capitol Hill? Wish you had a stronger relationship with your local library, other programs, or the local news media in your community?

Every year, Lights On Afterschool generates national news coverage, as 8,000 events bring more than one million Americans together to showcase the power of afterschool. Whatever your program needs, Lights On Afterschool is a chance to make sure your program gets it—and the resources on our website are ready to help! Choose your goal and explore the tools we have to help you meet it.

I need to meet more funders in my community

Make your Lights On event into a fundraiser for your afterschool program. We have tips on how to attract sponsors, how to make a compelling offer, and outreach materials to help you put your best foot forward.

I want to make the case for afterschool to policymakers

Lights On is a chance to showcase the very best of afterschool to the decision-makers in your community. We have invitations you can use to invite policymakers from every level of government, as well as sample text to help you proclaim Lights On Afterschool in your city and state and advice from the pros on how to attract policymakers to your event—and what to do once they’re there.

I want to network and meet new partners who can help my program succeed

Let the afterschool field be your guide! “Community involvement” and “sponsors & partnership” are two big features of our Case Studies page, where past successful events and advice from the pros can point you in the right direction.

Be sure to reach out to local media; policymakers and potential funders read the news in their communities, as do parents and other youth-serving organizations. Make sure they know they’re invited to your event. (And don’t forget to contact to your local library to forge a partnership!)

I want to host an event that blows everyone away—but what should I do?

In Top Event Ideas & Themes, you’ll find our four official themes for this year’s Lights On Afterschool celebration: youth voice, health and wellness, afterschool STEM, and library partnerships. Choose the theme that’s right for you and explore past events descriptions for inspiration and advice.

To get even more specific, head to Event Ideas & Activities. From here you search through tons of previous Lights On events according to the criteria that are most useful to you, including difficulty level, audience, theme, partners, planning time, and much more.

I want the smoothest planning process ever

Our Planning Timeline page is one of our most comprehensive resources to ensure that your Lights On event run as smoothly as possible. Here, you’ll find suggestions for every step of the Lights On process, from registration and first steps to the day of Lights On Afterschool and beyond. Use this tool to schedule your event planning and check off items on your Lights On to-do list.

There's so much more waiting on the Lights On Afterschool website. Keeping your goals in mind, take a few minutes to explore the site and find the resources you need to succeed.
