Grants available for state-level health and wellness policy

Voices for Healthy Kids, a collaboration between the American Heart Association and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, is accepting applications until January 11, 2019 to fund state-level campaigns in alignment with one of their policy levers dedicated to supporting child health.

The current out-of-school time policy lever focuses on passing legislation that will secure funding for local afterschool programs to receive training and technical support to implement the National Afterschool Association Healthy Eating and Physical Activity (HEPA) standards. The former policy lever focused on recognizing programs that were already implementing HEPA standards, while the current policy lever has a wider focus of securing public funding for training and technical assistance for HEPA.

Voices for Healthy Kids will allocate grants up to $250,000 per award for up to one year, starting in February 1 or March 1, 2019. Changes to the grant include the ability to allocate up to 20 percent of funds to lobbying and requiring a subgrant to a supporting organization in your statewide coalition.

Resources to guide you through this application process include the Voices for Healthy Kids Healthy Out-of-School Time Toolkit, along with their webinars exploring the Campaign Model Tool and Building Health Equity into Your Campaign. The Afterschool Alliance and Alliance for a Healthier Generation have also created a new webinar to provide an overview of the grant opportunities, helpful resources, and key tips for authentic coalition engagement.

Applicants will receive an award notification on February 15, 2019. If you have any questions about the Voices for Healthy Kids Grant Opportunities, please contact Shannon Melluzzo, Manager at Voices for Healthy Kids, at Shannon.Melluzzo@heart.org. Please feel free to contact Marisa Paipongna, Project Associate at the Afterschool Alliance, with any other questions at mpaipongna@afterschoolalliance.org.
