‘Whutever it Takes:’ DJ Whutever Creates 12-Week After-School DJ Program for Melrose Students, News 12 (New York)

Through hands-on afterschool instruction on using turntables and mixing music, DJ Whutever hopes to instill skills including communication and improvisation that will be useful in students’ lives and careers. The DJ, who is featured at Mets games and on New York radio stations, created the “Whutever it Takes DJ Academy” afterschool program at a Bronx elementary school to give back to the community and boost kids’ confidence. $50,000 Grant Will Help Yoga N Da Hood Expand to More Dallas Elementary Schools, Dallas News (Texas)

Ebony Smith created Yoga N Da Hood because there were no yoga studios in her neighborhood. Today, the nonprofit hosts yoga afterschool programs in 27 Dallas schools, and it just received a grant to expand its programming to nearly 3,000 students. Smith uses yoga to teach emotional awareness and coping skills, and she incorporates music therapy into the program. “[Students] talk about how relaxed they are, how de-stressed they are, or they didn't know it was going to feel good, or how hard it might have been,” Founder Ebony Smith told Dallas News. “Just to see them be encouraged and seeing that stress melt off of them is super exciting and why we do what we do.”

TechGarage Expands; Hires Local Students as Coaches, Lake Okeechobee News (Florida)

Through TechGarage, 600 elementary and middle school students from 12 Florida afterschool programs engage in college-level work designing, building, and competing with robots. Students use complex technology including laser cutters and 3D printers, and college students serve as mentors and coaches.“The program provides academic enrichment to students attending low-performing schools to help them meet state academic standards,” Lotus Holem, Boys & Girls Clubs of Palm Beach County’s director of programming, told the Lake Okeechobee News. “They really enjoy learning new skills that reinforce and complement the regular school day. For most of them, it will be their first time being exposed to robots and drones.”

Volunteer and Mentorship Program Helps Fight the Model Minority Myth, Provide Role Models, The Lantern (Ohio)

Healthy Asian Youth builds pathways to college for low-income Asian-American children in Ohio through afterschool programs focused on academic support and mentorship. The program seeks to combat the ‘model minority’ myth which falsely paints all Asian-Americans as wealthy. Student mentors from Ohio State University facilitate activities and form one-on-one relationship with students. “It can hurt you when you’re like struggling to fit into someone’s stereotype but also you want to be who you are, so I think it helps to also just see people who are kind of like them in college,” OSU student Lily Lin told the Lantern. “We do have some volunteers that are of Cambodian descent, and I think that is really awesome. I think that the kids love them and to see someone like them in higher education, they see that it’s possible.”
