Rise Up for Kids to Celebrate 25 years of Growing Strong, Johnson City Press (TN)

In Johnson City, Tennessee, what started as a seven-student basketball team has grown into a comprehensive faith-based youth mentoring program that has served hundreds of children over 25 years. Through afterschool, small group, and adult mentoring programs, Rise Up for Kids works to build pathways to college and create a safe community for students. By 2020, the program expects 118 former Rise Up kids will be attending or have graduated from college or technical school, or will be serving in the military. As former Rise Up participant and current staff member Brieyonna Robinson told the Johnson City Press, “My home was broken. My father was not in my life. And I was trying to figure out who I was. Rise Up helped me do that... They taught me to be proud of myself and to love myself.”

How Can Private Schools Contribute to the Public Good?, KQED (California)

Across the country, Horizons camps operate with a simple premise: Private schools can be part of the solution to summer learning gaps by using their resources to host free programming for low-income students. One example is the San Francisco Friends School (SFFS), which operates a free six-week Horizons camp to serve low-income youth in the neighborhood. The program’s model means each year the same students return and enjoy activities including science experiments, swimming lessons, and art projects that aim to inspire a love of learning. “I don’t see independent schools going anywhere anytime soon,” Guybe Slangen, director of community engagement at SFFS, told KQED. “But what can we do with what we have now and how might we be able to make an impact, a difference?”

Camp Win Gives Homeless NYC Students an Educational Edge During Summer, AM New York (New York)

While a lesson on making beet ice pops may have flopped, New York City’s Camp Win has developed plenty of successful, engaging programming to keep homeless children learning this summer. The free 10-week program reached nearly 700 children this year with activities ranging from rock climbing to coding with Morgan Stanley employees. In addition to providing educational support for its students, who tend to transfer schools at higher rates and have higher levels of absenteeism than students with stable homes, the program gives parents peace of mind by providing a safe and caring environment. “Most programs, people just ask the question, ‘How are you?’ But they very rarely ask how you’re feeling. We want to make sure we understand how our children are feeling,” Win Director of Children’s Services Tamra Ortiz told AM New York.

Horizons At Ethel Walker School Teaches STEAM To Hartford Girls, Hartford Courant (CT)

In Hartford, Connecticut, the Horizons summer camp at the Ethel Walker School is empowering girls through a science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics (STEAM) curriculum. Funded by a grant from the LEGO Community Fund U.S., the program was the first all-girls Horizons site in the nation. Students entering Pre-K through fourth grade build friendships across communities and combat summer learning loss through coding, poetry writing and more. “The reason we stress the ‘A’ in STEAM is that when you incorporate arts you’re using the other part of your brain,” teacher Isabel Ceballos told the Hartford Courant. “We are really providing our girls the skills to be creative problem solvers and creative thinkers.”
