After-School Program Teaches Students About Medicine, KGNS (Texas)

A new afterschool program called “Little Medical School” is building pathways to health and medical careers for sixth graders in Laredo, Texas. Through the program, 60 students at four middle schools learn about the human body through interactive demonstrations and scenarios in which they learn about various positions in the field of medicine. “We role-play, and this gives them an idea of what it is to be a nurse or a doctor, and maybe open up their minds to becoming one,” registered nurse and Little Medical School Instructor Oscar Villanueva told KGNS.

‘Turning the Corner’ for Dayton Schools: Expand this After-School Program, Dayton Daily News (Ohio)

In Dayton, Ohio, the Miracle Makers afterschool program takes a holistic approach to improving academic achievement – and more than 90 percent of students in the program improved their reading and math skills last year. Each class begins with a mindfulness exercise, and students engage in hands-on activities ranging from gardening to robotics to orchestra. The program also offers workshops for parents and free group mental health counseling for students. Education Director Ellen Mays told the Dayton Daily News that “half the battle is getting kids interested in reading or interested in learning in general. All of these extra experiences and all of these resources are in order to see themselves as successful learners, which in turn motivates them so they can learn.”

Kids Learn About Law Enforcement, Bullying and Giving Back, WVVA (West Virginia)

Students in the Bluefield Parks and Recreation After School Program in West Virginia spent a recent Friday afternoon learning about community engagement. After a conversation with a local police officer, students read a book about the impact of bullying and discussed how to respond to bullying in their community. They also volunteered at a local animal shelter. “I think they really enjoy it. We have a lot of kids that are first time volunteers. They’ve not experienced anything like this,” Youth Development Director Shannon Lowe told WVVA. “That certainly is our goal is to give them as much enrichment, expose them to as many activities [as] we can, so that we can really foster in them what respect means.”

The Re-Education Project is Empowering African American Youth, KHOU 11 (Texas)

While working as a teacher, Lindsay Gary noticed her students had few opportunities to learn about black history. To fill that gap, she founded the Re-Education Project, which operates afterschool and summer programs in Houston focused on black history, literacy, entrepreneurship, social intelligence and social justice. The program serves students in fifth through eighth grades. “We want to empower students to learn how they, too, can contribute to society,” Gary told KHOU 11.
