Tubman Academic Skills Center Awarded $2k Grant, Hudson Valley Press (New York)

The new Middle School Mentor Program at the Harriet Tubman Academic Skills Center (HTASC) will provide academic support and opportunities for leadership to middle school students at a Poughkeepsie apartment complex, thanks to a grant from the Ulster Savings Charitable Foundation. Through the program, middle school students will join HTASC’s elementary afterschool program for homework help and serve as mentors to the younger students. “Expanding HTASC to include middle school students in a meaningful way is sure to be a success,” Barb Adams, president of HTASC’s board of directors, told the Hudson Valley Press. “Being a mentor gives teenagers a sense of purpose and worth. Having young children look up to them makes them understand how important their behaviors are.”

In Metanoia afterschool programs, adults form mentoring relationships with students to instill a love of learning and empower them to make changes in their community. The South Carolina programs start each day with recreation, a nutritious snack, and tutoring, after which students split into two groups. One group uses a curriculum that develops entrepreneurship and business skills, while the other focuses on social justice and leadership. “We’re all about developing progressive, community-oriented adults,” Coordinator Craig Logan told the Daniel Island News. “Adults who are going to be able to give back to their community once they reach the age to do so.”

Adults, teens and children learn, grow and help improve their community at the Camp boxing gym in Texas. The gym’s afterschool program uses the thrill of the competition to instill values and skills including confidence, decision-making and persistence. Students can receive help with class work as well. “I have a strong desire to give children and adults a safe environment to go to and gaining their trust is very important to us,” Coach Mandy Cox told the Herald Democrat. “The definition of community service to me is to be open to a hand at whatever cost it may be to support someone else and be there for them. I needed [a] safe place as a child growing up as well.”
