YMCA and Kroger Cooking for Good with Roanoke Kids, WSLS 10 (Virginia)

A new YMCA afterschool program in Virginia teaches children about nutrition through unconventional snacks like chickpea cookies. The Cooking with Me program is funded by Kroger, a grocery store, and features hands-on cooking demonstrations of well-balanced meals and snacks. The program aims to promote nutrition in an area without convenient access to healthy options such as fresh produce. “It’s the most rewarding thing ever to have kids who are completely adamant that they don’t want to try something, and then by the end of class have tasted a little bite and they secretly love it,” instructor Molly Gutierrez told WSLS 10.

An After-School Program at One Denver School is Giving Young Latino Students a Chance to Learn and Think Critically About Their Culture, Denverite (Colorado)

The Somos1 (“We Are One”) afterschool program in Colorado creates a space where Latino students can learn about their history, culture and identity in ways that are absent from a typical school curriculum. Students engage in critical discussion and host events to commemorate Mexican holidays. A key goal is to build an empowering community where students support each other’s goals. “The group was created not only to be there for each other but to prevent suicide and drug use and stuff like that,” eighth-grade student Emilio Carrasco told the Denverite. “I feel like if we’re able to get this group or something like this group around, then it would help a lot with that stuff.”

Museum Offers Place for Students to Continue Learning After School, The Sentinel-Record (Arkansas)

Students in the Science After School Program at the Mid-America Science Museum in Arkansas recently planted a garden, and now they are measuring plant growth and tracking pollinator activity. The program uses hands-on experiments and outdoor activity to grow students’ interest in science. So far students have gone on nature hikes, learned about robotics, conducted physics experiments, and more. Director of Education Jeremy Mackey told the Sentinel-Record that one student’s teachers “are saying he’s a different kid. His behavior problems are disappearing, his reading level has gone up, and he’s now taking apart every electronic in the house because he needed a red wire. So he’s found something he’s really interested in.”

Preventing Long-Term Anger and Aggression in Youth Teaches Coping Skills, Binghamton Homepage (New York)

A new afterschool program in New York uses sports to teach students about emotion management and healthy behavior. The Preventing Long-Term Anger and Aggression in Youth (PLAAY) program trains high school mentors to help sixth grade students with their homework, lead them in physical activities, and talk to them about issues they may be facing. “The idea is if you can get a kid to understand that if you curse or go after someone on the football field, then you’ll get a 15-yard penalty and it’ll hurt the team. If you can get kids to understand that, and avoid that on the football field, then there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be able to do that in life too,” Head Football Coach Mike Ramil told the Binghamton Homepage.
