‘Bridge the Gap’ touts success in southern Marin schools, Marin Independent Journal (California)

For 23 years, Bridge the Gap has built pathways to college for students through group classes and one-on-one relationships. The free afterschool program in Marin City, California provides kindergarten through 12th grade students with warm meals, homework help, college entrance exam preparation and financial aid workshops. For the past six years, 100 percent of Bridge the Gap students have graduated high school and started college or entered military service. Development Director Bonnie Kirkpatrick told the Marin Independent Journal that during a listening tour, “one of the themes that kept rising up was the relationship — and that that was what students appreciated most. It wasn’t that we helped them pass algebra or got them through a lab assignment; it was that we cared and loved — and that it feels like family.”

Girls Excel In Sports And Fitness In Miami-Dade County Parks Fit2Lead Afterschool Program, CBS 4 Miami (Florida)

In Miami, the Fit2Play afterschool program promotes physical activity among children ages 6-14 through park-based sports and nutrition education. Run by Miami-Dade County Recreation and Open Spaces, the program reached more than 2,100 youth between 2010 and 2016. A recent analysis indicates female participants achieve particularly significant gains. For example, girls enrolled in the program for three years showed a 24 percent improvement in their 400-meter run times, on average.  “As we grow as a community, so does the need to provide kids with places they can go and feel safe and learn life lessons … that we know will help them throughout their lives and throughout their careers,” Maria I. Nardi, director of Miami-Dade County Parks, Recreation and Open Spaces told CBS 4 Miami.

UNF music mentors strike a [chord] with Jacksonville kids, The Florida Times-Union (Florida)

In Jacksonville, the University of North Florida (UNF) and the Don’t Miss A Beat Community Art Center collaborate to provide low-income youth with music education and mentorship. Children in the Don’t Miss a Beat afterschool program work with UNF music students to learn cello, clarinet, trumpet and more. An instrument maker sponsors the free instruments, and the community center also offers tutoring and civic engagement opportunities. “There are so many universal and very valuable life skills that come out of pursuing an artistic discipline,” UNF student mentor Kai Lee told the Florida Times-Union. “Putting time and dedication into learning an instrument teaches personal accountability and a good work ethic.”

West Side center embraces the goal of the International Day of the Girl, San Antonio Express-News (Texas)

At the West Side Girl Scout Leadership Center in San Antonio, girls in kindergarten through fifth grade have access to warm meals, a robotics lab, a library, and a Girl Genius tutoring lab. The center’s free afterschool program focuses on holistic leadership development, and the center also offers adult development classes for families. Participants form mentor relationships with program staff and volunteers, as well as with each other. “Some of the girls have been bullied,” 10-year-old Miriam told the San Antonio Express-News. “We help them to be courageous.”
