Final Schedule of Events

May 23

11 am - 2 pm

Welcome and Forums -- the forums will provide time for an in-depth conversation about topics of interest to afterschool advocates. Box lunches will be provided. Forum topics include:

1. Afterschool for Older Youth - Afterschool programs for older youth are hard to come by. This session will explore the need for programming for older youth, features of successful programs serving older youth and advocacy opportunities.

2. Afterschool in an Election Year - An election year brings lots of opportunities for afterschool advocates. This session will examine past successes in making afterschool count during an election and will provide strategies for you to raise the visibility of afterschool in 2006.

3. Math and Science in Afterschool - Many afterschool programs include math and science in their curriculum. This session will explore successful programs with a math/science focus and engage participants in a discussion of advocacy opportunities for such programs.

4. State Level Advocacy - A forum for state leaders who are interested in advancing state advocacy, including developing state policy agendas, preparing for the reauthorization of NCLB, connecting afterschool and obesity prevention and engaging youth in advocacy

Youth advocacy forum for all youth participants.

2:15 - 3 pm

Hill Visit Leaders Prep Session -- you will be notified if you are a hill visits leader at registration. This session will cover the essentials of leading a team of advocates. Advocacy Basics -- If you are a first time Challenge participant, we encourage you to attend this advocacy basics session.

3:15 -4:30 pm

Joint Afterschool Alliance and National League of Cities Welcome and Panel Presentation

Afterschool Advocates will be joined by participants in National League of Cities' Afterschool City Leaders Summit.

Panel will focus on Investing at All Levels to Achieve Afterschool for All and will feature city leaders, state leaders, philanthropic leaders and and local leaders.

4:45-5:45 pm

Hill Visits Prep -- In this session you will meet your fellow hill visit team members (including city leaders) and review talking points and overall strategy. Time will be provided for you to determine roles of team members and prepare for your meetings.

5:45-7:00 pm

Reception -- Joint networking reception for City Leaders and Afterschool Advocates.

May 24

7:45 - 9 am

Breakfast of Champions -- City Leaders will be recognized for their support of afterschool.

9:15 – 9:30 am

Buses depart hotel for Capitol Hill

10 am – 12 pm

Hill Visits – you will receive schedule of your hill visits at registration

12 – 1:30

Lunchtime Rally with Members of Congress – Dirksen Senate Office Building, Room 428

1 – 3 pm

Hill Visits continue

All events, with the exception of the Hill Visits and the Lunchtime Rally will take place at the Marriott Wardman Park Hotel, 2600 Woodley Rd, NW, Washington DC.
