Lights On Afterschool! Celebrated by 4-H Afterschool

The Afterschool Alliance thanks 4-H Afterschool for your energy and creativity in celebrating Lights On Afterschool!

We're thrilled to be working with you, and your national office, for this year's celebration on October 18, 2007. Be sure to register so that you get your Lights On Afterschool posters, and your event gets counted in the national total and is featured on our website.

Looking for ideas for your event? Here are some of the amazing celebrations 4-H has done in the past. To see plans for this year, search for 4-H events on the Find An Event page. Looking for an event partner? Search for events by city or ZIP code.

In Massachusetts, the Barnstable County 4-H invited the entire community to a celebration at the Camp Farley 4-H campground. The event, which celebrated diversity, featured a Native American crafts theme, and involved the area's Native American residents. Guests sat down together to dinner, donated by a local business, and then made Native American crafts including rain sticks and dream catchers. Invited guests included community partners, county commissioners, and a representative from the local Tribal Council, whom organizers asked to offer a traditional Native American blessing.

In Kaiserslautern, Germany at Vogelweh Air Force Base, 4-H used the Lights On event to introduce families to the 4-H program. The event featured "A Taste of Hispania" with families of Hispanic heritage planning a dinner, and "skill-a-thons" for participants. Families were also invited to a dance held in the Teen Center. The base flight chief, commander, and teachers from the local schools were also invited to attend.

In Mississippi, 4-H, the Department of Education, the mayor's office, the PTA, and youth representatives formed a statewide Lights On Afterschool committee, combining the strength of all the partners to put on two powerful and rousing afterschool rallies. In Jackson, U.S. Representative Bennie Thompson and State Representative Chuck Espy spoke to guests about the importance of afterschool programs. The mayor issued a Lights On Afterschool proclamation and JCPenney's Allison Johnson addressed the crowd. In Natchez, Mayor Phillip West spoke to more than 150 children.

Lights On Afterschool
is a celebration like none other and we at 4-H are proud to be a part of it. We know there are many 4-H programs involved with Lights On programs-keep up the good work! Let's all get involved to show the world the importance of after-school programs.
