Helping Students Recover and Accelerating Success

Tuesday, Jul 20, 2021 02:00 PM ET
House Afterschool Caucus Co-Chairs Representatives David Cicilline and Don Young will speak to the importance of strong federal support for afterschool and summer learning programs and the impact programs have on local communities. Following remarks by the Congressmen, a panel will discuss the role that afterschool and summer learning programs have played this year in supporting students during the pandemic. New data on both the challenges and opportunities for afterschool and summer learning programs will be presented, and panelists will discuss what summer learning programs look like this summer. Presenters will also discuss the important role of the Nita M. Lowey 21st Century Community Learning Centers as well as funding included in the American Rescue Plan that is being used to support local afterschool and summer learning programs nationwide. Afterschool and summer learning programs have a proven track record for increasing resilience, supporting positive youth development, providing nutritious meals, and preparing young people to be successful in school and in life.

This briefing is being presented in partnership with the Afterschool Alliance, National Summer Learning Association, Boys and Girls Clubs of America, Girls Inc., National League of Cities, and the National Recreation and Park Association.
