Meet the winner of our Lights On Afterschool poster contest

This year’s poster was created by Elizabeth F. and Sophia P. from Houston Healthy Hip-Hop: RAD ART, an afterschool program in Houston, Texas. Elizabeth and Sophia’s artwork features youth engaged in various afterschool activities, from science experiments and break dancing to space exploration and painting, symbolizing the range of passions afterschool encompasses. A lightbulb appears in the middle of the poster to signify keeping the Lights On Afterschool.

Houston Healthy Hip-Hop is a proud partner of CASE for Kids, TxACE, and together they have brought programs like RAD ART to life. At Houston Healthy Hip-Hop: RAD ART, students learn how to create masterpieces by applying different techniques while using modern-day art skills and technology. The RAD Art program is a vibrant component of the Houston Healthy Hip-Hop initiative, offering young participants a unique blend of creativity and expression. Launched in 2022 alongside other facets of the program, RAD ART has since blossomed into a cornerstone for aspiring artists within the community.

“I joined the program because I heard it was very cool and educational. I also heard my friends talk a lot about how the program is so fun,” said Sophia, when asked what inspired her to join RAD ART.

A typical day at RAD Art is filled with exploration and innovation. Students engage in various art projects catering to different skill levels, allowing them to express individuality while learning new techniques.

Elizabeth shared, “The thing I enjoy the most is that the program has so many activities and different types of art. For example, my friend and I have been writing and illustrating a book about life. The book relates to those who are new to somewhere or have felt betrayed. There is so much to do we never get bored. It has become one of my favorite things about school.”

Houston Healthy Hip-Hop: RAD ART is not just an afterschool program; it’s a vibrant community where young artists can explore, create, and thrive.
