Up to $15,000 for nonprofits working on music, education & community organizing

Whether you're starting from scratch or building out exisiting programming, the Sparkplug Foundation is a family foundation that can support your work! Their particular focus is on "the development of democratic movements and communities, especially those that work on issues of local democracy, justice, and sustainable energy" — subjects where afterschool programs, as organizations rooted in their communities and dedicated to youth development, are poised to make an impact.

Scope: The Sparkplug Foundation funds start-up organizations and new projects of established organizations in music, education, and community organizing.

Deadline: April 9 for preliminary questions, April 13 for letters of intent, and May 3 for completed applications.

Funds: Grants in the past have ranged from $1,000 to $15,000.

Eligibility: Nonprofit organizations.

How to apply: Read the FAQ and review the application instructions, then submit the initial questionnaire online.

Areas: Sparkplug gives preference to projects run on small budgets, projects of smallish organizations, and projects that are less likely to receive corporate, institutional or government funding.
