Beatrice After School Program Granted Another Five Years, Beatrice Daily Sun (Nebraska)

At the Beatrice Learning After School Time (BLAST) program in Beatrice, Nebraska, more than 170 students take part in fun, educational activities ranging from robotics to sewing. Students also grow their own vegetables in an on-site community garden and learn about nutrition in the process. “We provide them with lessons in all sorts of things,” Stoddard Site Supervisor Diane Summers told the Beatrice Daily Sun. “We get to open their eyes to opportunities they wouldn’t have otherwise.” The program will continue for another five years thanks to a 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant.

Thanks to a recently awarded 21st Century Community Learning Centers grant, Knickerbacker Middle School and Lansingburgh High School in Troy, New York will provide engaging and educational afterschool programs at their schools this fall. “This additional funding will allow us to strengthen our relationships with Lansingburgh community partners, continue new programs started this year and expand our current extracurricular offerings,” Lansingburgh Superintendent of Schools Antonio Abitabile told News 10. The schools will partner with the Arts Center of the Capital Region, Boys & Girls Club, Cornell Cooperative Extension, Troy Public Library and Unity House of Troy.

Education Station: CMSD's 'Summer Learning Experience' Back for 2nd Year, WKYC-TV (Ohio)

Several thousand Cleveland Metropolitan School District (CMSD) students will spend their summer exploring science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), karate, community service, social justice, and gardening, all while sharpening their reading and math skills. More than 8,400 students participated in the district’s first-ever CMSD Summer Learning Experience last year, and district leaders say it was so successful they hope to make the program permanent. “We're just excited just to see our students in action and having fun and learning…. It's not gonna be a situation where students are sitting in the classroom and someone is just lecturing them, no. They're gonna get to get their hands dirty. They're gonna get to have a lotta hands-on experiences throughout the summer," Chief Engagement Office Lee Buddy told WKYC-TV.
