Empowering youth voices: Reflecting on the 2023 Youth Policy Forum

At Ignite Afterschool, Minnesota’s statewide afterschool network, we recently had the privilege of hosting our 2023 Youth Policy Forum, an event dedicated to amplifying youth voice, advocating for impactful policies that positively affect Minnesota's young people, and celebrating the many policy victories during this legislative session.  In this blog, we reflect on the forum's key highlights and discuss the significance of engaging youth in policy discussions and decision-making processes, with a special emphasis on celebrating the "Afterschool Community Learning Grants" Bill as our biggest win of the session.

Inspiring Dialogue and Collaboration: The Youth Policy Forum brought together over 100 individuals and legislators representing 50 organizations, creating a vibrant space for meaningful dialogue and collaboration. Participants delved into crucial topics such as child care assistance, youth-centered education reform, mental health support, and the protection of marginalized communities. The discussions were marked by the passion and dedication of attendees, who shared their insights and experiences to shape the future of youth policy in Minnesota.

Celebrating a Significant Win: The “Afterschool Community Learning Grants” Bill! One of the most exciting achievements of the legislative session was the successful restoration of state funding to the Afterschool Community Learning Grants. This groundbreaking victory was a result of our collective advocacy efforts and determination to prioritize youth-serving organizations. The bill secured $30 million over four years to support high-quality, no-cost programs for young people across the state. At the Youth Policy Forum, we celebrated this milestone and recognized the immense impact it will have on the accessibility and availability of afterschool programs for Minnesota's youth.

Amplifying Youth Voices: While celebrating the success of the Afterschool Community Learning Grants Bill, the Youth Policy Forum never lost sight of its core purpose: amplifying youth voices. We firmly believe that young people are not just beneficiaries but also active contributors to policy decisions that directly impact their lives. The forum provided a platform for young individuals to share their perspectives, concerns, and aspirations, ensuring that their voices were heard and valued.
