New California “Kids Code” program to expand computer coding in afterschool

The Kids Code Pilot Program, which passed the California Legislature earlier this year and was championed by Assemblymember Kevin McCarty, will provide $15 million in funding over three years to expand access to coding in afterschool programs across the state. The pilot program will allow existing After School Education and Safety (ASES) Programs to tap into this new funding and begin offering computer coding as part of their afterschool program. Between 180 and 250 ASES sites throughout the state will receive these additional funds, which can be used to bring in coding curriculum and provide training to staff, among other expenses.

Investments like the Kids Code program are key to addressing access issues for students, particularly in STEM-related subjects. The more opportunities a young person has to engage in hands-on STEM learning at a young age, the more likely that student is to develop an interest and identity with STEM subjects. Afterschool and summer learning programs provide a place to foster interest and identity in new subjects, and can be a well-positioned partner in expanding access to computer coding for students. The focus of the new Kids Code program on K-9 students will provide much needed opportunities for younger students to spark an interest in this area, where opportunities like these often don’t present themselves to students until high school. 

Equity in STEM is just as important as access when it comes to student learning. Too often, opportunities to engage in hands-on STEM learning, and specifically computer coding, are only available to students in well-resourced communities. An advantage that afterschool and summer programs bring to addressing equity issues is that these programs serve a significantly higher numbers of students from low-income and underserved communities, the same students who are often left out of the same high-quality learning experiences that their peers from middle- and high-income families can readily access.

Addressing equity starts with ensuring students from these communities are provided with quality opportunities to engage and learn, including through computer coding. With Kids Code, the emphasis of the pilot program in California will be on programs operating in underserved communities, with a focus on serving areas with a higher number of students receiving Free or Reduced Priced Meals (FRPM). This emphasis will play a critical role in helping to close the gender gap and increase racial diversity in STEM-related fields by providing the opportunities that young people desire.

The Afterschool Alliance continues to focus on expanding access to STEM opportunities in afterschool and summer programs. Through our afterschool STEM work funded through the Overdeck Family Foundation, we hope to leverage programs like Kids Code to bring computer coding opportunities to more students in programs across the country.
