Charlotte Organizations Offer Affordable Summer Camps to Support Working Families, WCNC (North Carolina)

In Charlotte, North Carolina, the Salvation Army and other community organizations are expanding access to affordable summer camps by offering low-cost programs, scholarships and financial assistance to help families manage childcare during the summer months. Community leaders note that traditional camps can cost between $250 and $450 per week, out of reach for many families. “Oftentimes, parents have to make a decision about, am I gonna buy groceries, am I gonna pay the rent, but they also have to go to work. School is out, what do I do with my children—so summer camp is a very important resource to have,” Salvation Army Major Andrew Wiley told WCNC.

With End of School Year, Summer's Official Arrival, City Shares Mayor’s 2026 Summer Youth Guide, Patch (Connecticut)

At a recent summer kickoff event with city officials and community leaders, New Haven, Connecticut, Mayor Justin Elicker highlighted the wide range of free and low-cost summer camp opportunities available to keep kids active, engaged and learning throughout the summer. The Mayor’s 2026 Summer Youth Guide features an extensive listing of free and affordable camps, special events, youth employment opportunities, and city programs for children, teens, and families. “For our children, learning happens all the time,” New Haven Public Schools Superintendent Madeline Negrón told Patch. “We are proud to offer fun and challenging summer programs that support their learning and growth and that meet the diverse needs of New Haven families.”

East St. Louis Schools Could Lose Food Pantry, After-School Programs While Federal Grant is in Limbo, St. Louis Public Radio (Missouri)

Thanks to federal Full Service Community Schools funding, the East St. Louis School District in Illinois has expanded tutoring and afterschool programs designed to combat chronic absenteeism and distributed food, clothing, and hygiene products to families in need. What they offer is “just really contingent upon the community and what they identify as being their needs, and there's definitely a lot of needs here,” Desiree Nelson, the school district's community schools specialist, told St. Louis Public Radio. But now, those supports and similar programs across the state are in jeopardy because the Trump administration defunded the grant program last December. The organization that administers the program in Illinois, Afterschool for Children and Teens Now Illinois, is suing the administration, arguing the grants’ termination is illegal and jeopardizes the well-being of vulnerable students and families.

School’s Out, but Philly Kids Are Back in the Classroom for Summer Programs, KYW Newsradio (Pennsylvania)

This summer, Philadelphia elementary and middle schoolers are boosting their math and reading skills, taking enriching field trips, playing sports, creating art and more in the city’s Summer Achievers Program. Held at 70 school sites throughout the city, the free 6-week summer program is designed to keep kids engaged and off screens while their parents are at work. “They’re not on electronics. They’re not in front of the TV. They’re not home by themselves. Their parents can feel better,” Anne-Marie Constable, Extended Day/Extended Year coordinator at Anne Frank Elementary School, told KYW Newsradio. “It keeps their brains going. And these kids — a lot of these kids would be home by themselves, not having any socialization or any activity. It gives the kids routine.”
