What makes afterschool professionally rewarding

One of the most rewarding professional experiences of my career in afterschool was serving as an Afterschool Ambassador for Oklahoma during the 2010-2011 school year, and then continuing to work with the Ambassador program in the years since. So, in 2017 when the Afterschool Alliance launched its Afterschool Youth Ambassador program, I just knew it would be a terrific opportunity for some lucky student.

That’s exactly what it turned out to be – for our student and also for me!

Harli Jo McKinney is the kind of student that you know, as soon as you meet her, has great things ahead. She’s smart, well spoken, has a terrific head on her shoulders, and a heart that pumps compassion through every bit of her body. She’s been in our program for years and years, so she gets why afterschool is so important to kids in our community – keeping them safe during a time of day when safety isn’t guaranteed, and helping them open up new horizons for learning.

She makes it her business to help her fellow students succeed. She’ll sit down with kids who are struggling with homework and offer to work with them. And kids just gravitate toward her, particularly the younger ones.

During her time with the Youth Afterschool Ambassador program, I worked with her as she took on several new challenges, including producing a short video on afterschool, taking part in a webinar for the Afterschool Alliance, traveling to Washington, D.C., for the 2018 Afterschool for All Challenge where she met with Members of Congress and their staff members, and prepared and delivered remarks at a rally for afterschool.

Those were all new experiences for her and, as she worked her way through the challenges, I could feel her vision and her confidence growing. By the time we got to Washington, D.C., for the Challenge at the end of the school year, she was more than ready. She knew just what she wanted to say at our meetings with Oklahoma’s delegation, including our local Member of Congress, Rep. Tom Cole.

Earlier in the school year, before the Youth Ambassador opportunity arose, she’d contemplated running for the student council, but decided against doing so because, as a 9th grader, she thought she might be hard-pressed to do the job. When we got to our seats on the plane back from Washington, she told me she knew then that she was ready. This year, she ran for district student council president and won. When she takes office next year, she’ll be the first student from our school to serve in that role.

As any afterschool professional will tell you, helping your students succeed is one of the most rewarding parts of the job. Sometimes success takes the form of staying out of trouble or overcoming adversity. Sometimes it’s finding a new passion, something that will lead to a career or to a lifelong interest. And sometimes, as in Harli’s case, it’s being there with them as they bloom into the capable young adults you know they can be.

One other note about the Youth Ambassador program that I found striking was that the students, even though they were scattered around the county, bonded with each other, particularly when they all met up in Washington, D.C., for the Afterschool for All Challenge. They stayed in touch, texting, snapchatting, and more. These are kids from very different worlds – east coast, west coast and Midwest; urban, suburban and rural. What brought them together in the first place was their appreciation that afterschool was a key part of their growing up. What united them thereafter was the experience of stretching beyond their comfort zone and succeeding in challenges they hadn’t imagined themselves taking on anytime soon.

And that, right there, is what makes afterschool so special to me: Giving students the chance to grow and succeed, to find their path and to get started on it.
