Afterschool Programs in New York (New York Times)

300 Protest Child-Care Fee Hike (Arizona Republic)
Hundreds of people rallied at the state capitol last week, protesting budget cuts that will increase licensing fees for afterschool programs and other industries.  The fees placed on programs will inevitably be passed on to the families and children they serve.
 
Program Based on Harlem Initiative Shows Promise (Chicago Tribune)
The Woodlawn Children's Promise Zone is an afterschool program in Chicago that engages the entire community in helping at-risk children.  It operates much like the Harlem Children’s Zone in New York, which representatives from Chicago will be learning about at a conference this week.

Lights on Afterschool Celebrates Programs for Latchkey Kids (Cleveland Daily Banner, Tennessee)
The Boys & Girls Club of Cleveland participated in Lights on Afterschool by hosting a rally to draw attention to the need for afterschool programs.  The America After 3PM survey, released by the Afterschool Alliance and sponsored by the JCPenney Afterschool Fund, found that 15.1 million children are unsupervised after the school day ends.
