Lights On Afterschool: River City Drumbeat

Monday, Oct 25, 2021 06:00 PM ET

River City Drumbeat, a new documentary about the River City Drum Corp afterschool program, is a powerful story of music, love, and legacies. Edward "Nardie" White devoted his life to leading the African-American drum corps he co-founded with his wife Zambia Nkrumah in Louisville, Kentucky three decades ago. Together they inspired youth from their West Louisville neighborhood to thrive by connecting them with the art and cultural traditions of their African ancestors. Now Albert Shumake, whose destiny was shaped by the drumline, must take up the mantle for the next generation. Meanwhile, student drummers Imani, Jailen, and Emily navigate adolescence and life changes. River City Drumbeat follows this creative community of mentors, parents, and youth making their way in a world where systemic forces raise obstacles to fulfilling their dreams.

Join us in conversation with River City Drum Corp as we watch short clips from the film and discuss aspects of the program and its impact. This event kicks off the Afterschool Alliance’s 22nd annual Lights On Afterschool, the nation’s celebration of afterschool programs. Lights On Afterschool is held each October to shine a light on afterschool programs and the opportunities they provide young people to learn and grow. In a typical year, 8,000+ events draw 1 million Americans. This year, a mix of in-person and virtual activities will take place.
