The biggest and brightest Lights On Afterschool yet

We celebrated by coding, dancing, cooking, drawing, reading, making music, sharing. We had book giveaways. Canned food drives. Hackerspaces and maker faires. Puzzle pieces that, together, form over-sized lightbulbs that fill gymnasium floors. Inflatable planetariums for students to explore. Fire safety demonstrations. Robot battles. Poetry slams. Placemat-making for seniors who receive food from Meals on Wheels. Health and wellness fairs. History discussions. Pajama parties. Cultural diversity celebrations. Battles of the Bands. Awards ceremonies. Parades. Anti-bullying programs. Glow-in-the-dark bowling. Giant Jenga games.

We lit up the Korean Veterans Memorial Bridge in Nashville, TN; the waterfalls of Sioux Falls, SD; Florida’s Orlando Eye; the Pennsylvania Capitol; Indiana’s Indianapolis Power & Light building; the Dallas, TX skyline; the M&T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, MD; and of course the Empire State Building in NYC.

We saw numbers that knocked our socks off:

  • 8,400+ events, more than ever before
    • 1,800+ with a healthy activity theme
    • 600 events featuring STEM
    • 300 in support of grade level reading, and another 300 with libraries
  • 1 million Americans rallying for afterschool
  • 400,000 donated KIND bars sent to nearly 1,400 events nationwide
  • Thousands of afterschool supporters posed proudly with their arms up over their heads in the shape of a lightbulb, embracing their silly side to help the cause
  • 44 states and the CA Department of Education declaring Lights On Afterschool Day
  • #LightsOnAfterschool in the top 15 tags trending on Twitter
  • And new polling showing that, across party lines and demographic groups, our country believes in afterschool programs and wants our leaders to invest in them.

We know there are challenges coming. But let’s hold on to the feeling we have today, and stay strong knowing that afterschool program are valued by communities, relied on by parents, and a truly critical part of young people’s learning.

You are afterschool, and you are amazing.

Save the Date: On October 24, 2019 we celebrate 20 years of Lights On Afterschool!

Not ready to end this year's celebration yet? Reach out to Congress and encourage them to support afterschool, and help us keep the lights on next year.
