Upcoming STEM opportunities from Million Girls Moonshot

Teen Science Cafe

The Teen Science Cafe is an opportunity for youth in rural areas to engage in conversations around STEM with each other and with a scientist, engineer, or inventor. Uniquely fitted to afterschool and out-of-school time programs, the goal of the Teen Science Cafe is to garner excitement around STEM outside of school and engage youth from all backgrounds, interests, and motivations.

The program is run by teens, for teens, with the help of a “rural fellow” to facilitate. Requirements for fellows include: current work with a group of high school aged teens; work in a rural area, as defined by population size and distance from a city; have a commitment to STEM education outside of school;   excitement about leading a series of TSCs as well as participating in the project’s research and community of practice. The deadline to apply is September 30, 2021.

Makers Centered Learning Community of Practice (CoP) with the Makers + Mentors Network

The Makers Centered Learning model onboards youth typically underrepresented in STEM by fostering an environment that engages youth with STEM and develops an engineering mindset. Maker Centered Learning builds the confidence and abilities of youth who are typically underrepresented in STEM careers by tackling real-world issues and investigating real solutions to the problems that face their community and their world. As a result, these students believe that STEM is for them, and can see themselves in these fields and professions.

Through a community of practice, state afterschool network leads, program providers, and/or Moonshot partners will learn the research and strategies to best inspire and engage youth in STEM learning. Through five, 90 minute sessions, leaders will explore an essential topic and engage with others through facilitated discussion and working sessions. The first CoP is being held October 5, 2021. Register here for the series.

Family Engagement Community of Practice (CoP) with Bunmi Esho and Linda Kekelis

The Family Engagement CoP focuses on the intersection between youth success in STEM subjects and family engagement in their child’s education. Open to network leads, Moonshot/STEM staff, and afterschool program providers, this opportunity provides  professional development to better implement models that help parents support their child in STEM, foster equitable community engagement in STEM, and disseminate strategies across the state network to address different community challenges.

Participants will attend six, 75 minute training sessions to research and implement their own practices for family and community engagement in STEM learning across the state network. The first session begins October 21, 2021. Register here for the first session.
