75 NYC Schools Will Get After-School Programs Next Year, Adams Announces, Chalkbeat

Thanks to a $331 million investment, next year New York City will add 10,000 afterschool seats at 11 community centers and 75 schools, enabling more parents to work and more students to benefit from the critical support programs provide. Recent research from Citizens’ Committee for Children of New York finds that four out of five New York City families can’t afford afterschool programs for their children. “This is the first big step toward our vision of ‘After-School for All’ that will help us create a city where every child has a safe, enriching place to grow beyond the classroom,” Mayor Eric Adams told Chalkbeat.

Nonprofit Provides Food Aid to Students and Their Families Impacted by Government Shutdown, ABC 7 (New York)

At New York Edge afterschool programs, staff responded to the growing number of families facing food insecurity due to the government shutdown and lapse in SNAP benefits by opening food pantries and providing additional meals at the more than 140 New York city schools they serve. “You can’t thrive in the classroom if you are hungry and this crisis has exacerbated that,” Rachael Gazdick, CEO of New York Edge, told ABC 7. New York Edge provides students with healthy snacks and meals at its afterschool programs as well as culturally appropriate food at its food pantries for families to take home.
