Celebrating Black History 365 with Howard University Television

Black History Month may only last 28 days, but opportunities for learning don’t end in February. There are many ways to celebrate the past and present contributions of Black people to U.S. history, culture, and society all year long. Wondering where to get resources, activities, and media content?  Look no further: WHUT is here to support with resources, both on and off screen. 

Howard University Television is the first public station in the United States to be licensed to and operated by a Historically Black College/University (HBCU) - Howard University. It is our mission to deliver educational, entertaining and intellectually stimulating multicultural and intergenerational programming to the public in the Metro DC region. The station endeavors to underscore Howard University’s commitment to excellence in Truth and Service. As a result, one priority of our station is to deliver diverse and engaging content for all ages. While we achieve this through many facets, we pulled three resources below to teach students about Black history and culture every day. 

Incorporate Black history and Black experiences into your units

The best way to teach any kind of history is by weaving it into lessons, workshops, and curricula organically. Students are often taught about the contributions of Black people in isolation, but we invite you to celebrate  year-round. WHUT and PBS Learning Media collaborated on a collection of free resources for educators to use both in and outside of the classroom. While the learning media is comprised of a vast number of resources, one example of that is An Educator's Guide to Expanding Narratives about American History & Culture. This collection has been carefully selected by New York City educator and curriculum consultant Vivett Dukes. The content highlighted within each topic is intended to expand the scope of voices traditionally centered in classroom curricula by elevating stories by and about Black, Indigenous, and People of Color.
