New guide for programs serving youth in out-of-school time: Indiana Afterschool Network's Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Tool

What are the Indiana Specialty Standards?

Our Specialty Standards serve as a guide that can help providers gauge how thoroughly their programs are meeting the needs of their youth and then outline a path toward continuously improving their program’s effectiveness. We’ve created standards in a variety of disciplines - from Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Standards to Summer Learning Standards - which provide guidance to all stakeholders involved: providers can self-assess and gauge their improvement over time; families and parents can use the standards to help identify quality programs; and school leaders can reference the standards in planning and implementing their own programming.

What are the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Standards?

The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Standards were created to address the needs of diverse youth through various assessments. These standards aim to create equitable opportunities in the afterschool and summer space, incorporate inclusive practices, and train staff to provide culturally-responsive and respectful programming.

What is covered in the DEI Standards?

Within each DEI standard are checkpoints that help measure how effectively a program is implementing a specific practice. By rating their programs from 1-4 in the following categories, providers can measure the degree to which each of these quality indicators is present:

  1. Administration: Includes equitable hiring and recruitment practices, equitable compensation for staff, responsive program planning, additional screening for partners, and regular evaluations to address deficits in addressing community needs.
  2. Professional Development: Staff are trained on how to handle bullying and discrimination, engage in dialogue about DEI, and understand community needs through regular surveys. There is also equitable and fair pursuit of program leadership opportunities through development pipelines.
  3. Participant Outreach, Recruitment, and Retention: Recruitment and enrollment strategies are intentionally focused on underserved youth communities.
  4. Family and Community Engagement: There is meaningful and inclusive family and community engagement, and programs are encouraged to connect families to outside resources and services.
  5. Environment and Materials: Environment is inclusive, culturally responsive, and emotionally safe for youth, including youth who have experienced trauma.
  6. Curricula and Programming: Curricula is culturally relevant and provides equitable access of content to youth.
  7. Multilingual Learners: Multilingual Learners are supported with academic and language development support and equipped with social and emotional development skills.

How can programs use the DEI tool?

Each standard ensures that Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion practices are being implemented and continuously evolving in the form of equitable opportunity for staff and students, curricula and content that accurately represents the student body, and outreach and engagement practices that are accessible to all families. The Indiana Afterschool Standards implement categories based on research-based best practices in quality out-of-school time programs for programs to observe and replicate.

Why is this important for programs?

Ultimately, equity-driven programs foster inclusive environments that reflect the communities they serve, teach youth how to succeed in a global society, encourage cultural exploration, and ensure rich opportunities for underserved communities.
