Our Events are as follows: 1) Bright Ideas Banner - ASP and 21st CCLC will create a collaborative banner with the Lights On Afterschool Logo, with fluorescent hand prints filling the lightbulb and students writing why they like the After School Program or 21st CCLC 2) Office Nightlight - Students will engage in the Lights On Afterschool lightbulb activity (color lightbulb, write why they like ASP/21st CCLC.) The artwork will then be collected, and hung from the ASP Office ceiling, along with fairy/hanging lights illuminating the room like it is a giant nightlight. Students will be able to walk through the office from one door, view the room, read their artwork, and leave out through another door. Meant to simulate a nightlight, big light bulb, etc. Parents will be invited to view the room as well. 3) Nightlight Interviews (Pending Approval) - Students will be interviewed 'tik-tok' style with pop-mics. Students will be interviewed for one minute, and asked questions related to ASP/21st CCLC, bright ideas, the future, their preferences, silly questions, and things to make them think. This will really showcase the different students that attend the programs and give them a chance to express themselves.

Details: As part of the Afterschool Matters Campaign, Big Buddy will lead middle school youth through a hands-on civic engagement and advocacy experience centered around the question: “Why does Afterschool Matter?” Through a guided lesson on advocacy and effective communication, students will learn how to articulate the value of afterschool programs from their own lived experiences. The lesson will culminate in the writing of personal letters addressed to local leaders, including State Legislators, City Council Members, and School Board Members, representing the communities our students live and learn in. During Fall Break (October 21–22), when students are out of school, Big Buddy will take participating youth to visit key civic locations such as the Louisiana State Capitol, City Hall, and School Board offices. These visits will provide students with a meaningful, real-world connection to the spaces where decisions are made, deepening their understanding of leadership, governance, and civic responsibility. Students will deliver their letters in person, along with letters written by their peers in other grades. This experience will not only reinforce communication skills and youth voice, but also promote a sense of agency and connection to their community. After the advocacy visits, students will enjoy a celebratory outing—a time to reflect, relax, and recognize their contributions to the broader conversation around youth programming. As a continuation of the campaign, these city and state leaders will be invited to attend the "Beyond the Bell" Advocacy Breakfast on October 23rd, co-hosted by Big Buddy and Kids’ Orchestra. That event, officially registered with the Afterschool Alliance by our partner organization Kids’ Orchestra, will further spotlight the power of afterschool programs and the importance of sustained community support. The celebration will take place on Thursday, October 23, from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. on the GPLA campus. Students, families, law enforcement partners, and community leaders are invited to participate in an afternoon of fun, learning, and community unity. Guests will begin the evening with a Student Showcase Walkthrough, featuring displays of student STEM projects centered around this event and artwork. A Welcome and Kickoff Ceremony led by students will highlight the purpose of Lights On Afterschool and recognize special guests, including members of local law enforcement. At 4:00 p.m., the community will join together for a symbolic Unity Glow Walk, led by police vehicles with lights flashing in honor of the initiative. Families and students will carry glow sticks and LED candles to declare together: “Lights On for Afterschool!” Following the walk, law enforcement officers will open their patrol cars for student tours, allowing students to see first-hand the technology and tools used to keep the community safe. The centerpiece of the event will be the Cops & Community vs. Kids Unity Games, a lively competition where students face off against local officers, community leaders, and parents in a variety of interactive, carnival-style games. Activities will include corn hole, football toss, axe throwing (safe Velcro version), bumper balls, Jenga, and more. A live DJ will keep the atmosphere upbeat, while families capture memories at a photo booth. Guests will also enjoy light refreshments throughout the event. The event will conclude with closing remarks where we will highlight other citywide events honoring Lights On Afterschool, such as the Southeastern Louisiana University Dome being illuminated that evening. This year, we would like to showcase our 2025 summer program, which focused on English language development through engaging and meaningful activities. Our students also explored the importance of self-expression as they navigate communities that often overlook their voices. This year, we are proud to share the videos and other projects they created—powerful expressions that reflect their experiences and perspectives. In addition, we offered various programs centered on social-emotional learning to support the holistic development of each child. Children were engaged, thanks to amazing community partners, in a great variety of meaningful experiences that will create lifelong memories. Overcoming many barriers, especially emotional ones, and supporting children who have experienced trauma has been a central focus of our work. That is why this year we will be partnering during our event, with other agencies in the Lehigh Valley that support entire families as social-emotional wellness partners.
